Many came to first learn about Drake’s rap skills during his portrayal as Jimmy Brooks in the seventh season of “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” The following year, in 2008, the rapper left the show to focus on his music career.
Since then, he’s consistently been at the top of the rap game.
As previously reported by AfroTech, Drake became Shazam’s all-time most-searched artist with 350 million searches in August 2022.
While it’s clear that Drake is one of the biggest rappers of today, there was a time when he was still looking to find his footing lyrically.
Past lyrics of Drake’s, which were written on sheets of paper have resurfaced and are up for auction, TMZ reports.
A rep from the auction platform told the outlet that the bars were written by Drake when he was a teenager while working at his uncle’s furniture factory in Memphis. Once the factory shut down, his papers were found in a dumpster outside of it.
The lyrics are being auctioned off on Moments In Time. The starting price is $20,000.
According to the outlet, some of the featured lyrics in the rough drafts came to be Drake’s song “Come Winter” — initially “Come Spring,” which is off his debut mixtape “Room For Improvement.”
“We’re in the age of conflict and knowledge, But we’re trapped in this cage of barbed wire and wreckage, With the freedom to go to college,” Drake wrote at the start of one of the pages. “The freedom to indulge and dissolve ourselves in the process, The law says you have witnessed an audience in the race of silence, Take refuge in a response that defines the face of violence.”
In addition to the lyrics, the name "Sylvia" was written on one of the pages along with a phone number.
The auctioned lyrics are just one example of how Drake’s career journey is a testament to perseverance.
As previously shared by AfroTech, he shared a screenshot that revealed he once earned $100 to perform at Kool Haus, a show that Ice Cube headlined back in 2006.
“This is for anybody getting 100 a show right now…keep going,” Drake wrote on his Instagram story.
