While the historic news of Eric Adams being elected as New York City’s second Black mayor is still fresh off the press, the politician is already ten steps ahead with his set game plan.
On Nov.4, Eric Adams tweeted that he plans to take his first three city paychecks in bitcoin. The tweet came in after Miami’s mayor Francis Suarez shared that he would take his next paycheck 100% in bitcoin in response to a Twitter user asking who would be the first American politician to do so.
“In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor,” Adams tweeted. “NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!”

The exchange between the two politicians continued as Suarez followed up with his support for Adams’ notion to shape New York City into a “crypto capital.”
“Touché…congrats on the election and I look forward to the friendly competition in making our respective cities a crypto capital!”
According to Bloomberg, the mayor envisions New York City creating its very own cryptocurrency.
Currently, under Suarez’s tenure, Florida’s MiamiCoin is the only city in the U.S. to collect revenue through digital currency. The Washington Post reports that MiamiCoin has generated $7.1 million since its launch in August. Once he takes office, Adams plans to push for the Empire State to follow suit and transform into a hub for cryptocurrency.
“He has a MiamiCoin that is doing very well — we’re going to look in the direction to carry that out,” Adams told Bloomberg Radio.
To execute his mission, Adams is cognizant that the city has to bring in trained workers in crypto to work there, as well as to take a look into what exactly is delaying Bitcoin from thriving.
