Preparation for life after death, though daunting, is essential. This can take root in several forms, including a will or trust. A thorough understanding of the differences between the two is paramount to making the right decision for the beneficiaries who will seize control of the mentioned assets.
In 2018, Marvel’s “Black Panther” had the world in a proverbial chokehold. Black children and adults everywhere were crossing their arms proudly, exclaiming, “Wakanda, forever!” A significant part of this cinematic magic and influence was the performance of Oscar-nominated actor Chadwick Boseman. Sadly succumbing to colon cancer, Boseman passed away in August 2020. But without a living will, his estate was left in limbo. Almost two years later, Boseman’s estate has been settled.
The legacy of Chadwick A. Boseman lives on. Variety reports that Netflix has just announced the Chadwick A. Boseman Scholarship at the late actor’s alma mater, Howard University. The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will be geared toward incoming students at the historically Black university’s College of Fine Arts. As previously reported by AfroTech, the newly reestablished college was named after Boseman in May of 2021. The four-year scholarship is worth a whopping $5.4 million and will cover the full cost of university tuition. “It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of an endowed scholarship in honor of alumnus, Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continues to inspire,” said Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick, M.D. in an official statement. “This scholarship embodies Chadwick’s love for Howard, his passion for storytelling, and his willingness to support future generations of Howard students. The late Chadwick Boseman is receiving the highest honor from his beloved alma mater. Today, Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick announced that the school’s newly-reestablished College of Fine Arts — led by newly named Dean Phylicia Rashad — will now be named in honor of alumnus Boseman, whose remarkable acting career has inspired millions of people around the world, both before and after his untimely passing. Dean Rashad — a decorated actress herself — had the pleasure of training and mentoring Boseman during his time at Howard and knew early on that he had a one-of-a-kind gift to share with the world. “Unrelenting in his pursuit of excellence, Chadwick was possessed with a passion for inquiry and a determination to tell stories – through acting, writing, and directing – that revealed the beauty and complexity of our human spirit,” she said about the news of Boseman’s recognition. Last August, Boseman passed away at the age of 43 after a long, tough battle with colon...

After this year’s Oscars committee messed up, a Chadwick Boseman non-fungible token (NFT) is getting a whole new redesign. Deadline is reporting that the NFT created in honor of the late “Black Panther” actor will no longer feature the actor’s likeness. It’s unclear what the new design will look like, though one of the designers hinted that it will be completely different from what Oscars attendees took home in their swag bags. “I now recognize that Chadwick’s face is a triggering reminder of his death rather than his life,” said Andre Oshea, one of the artists who designed the controversial Chadwick Boseman NFT. Oshea’s full statement can be found below. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Black 3D Artist (@andreoshea__) NFTs have been making quite the splash in the art world as of late because of their ability to digitally authenticate a piece of work. While there’s no professional consensus on whether NFTs will retain their value — or importance — through the years,...
Chadwick Boseman ‘s passing on Friday, Aug. 28 rocked the world. His fans and colleagues not only mourned his untimely death at age 43 but were also shocked by the news of his silent battle with colorectal cancer. Boseman was diagnosed with the disease in stage three in 2016 but remained tight-lipped about his health as he brought massive characters to the silver screen, including Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and most notably, Marvel’s Black Panther. And while Boseman’s transition has been an unfortunate addition to the list of lives lost this year, it has also highlighted the need for more Black people to get regular screenings for the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, Black men and women get colon cancer at higher rates —24 and 19 percent, respectively—compared to other races. Additionally, INOVA says that Black people have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer and have the shortest survival rate of most cancers. In honor of Boseman’s life and legacy,...
