NBA Star Dwight Howard Inks $500K Deal With Arrowhead Water

Even though Dwight Howard has been in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for nearly two decades, he’s carving out a legacy more meaningful than basketball. To continue his legacy after he crosses the finish line of his basketball career, Howard plans to make an impact in the Los Angeles community. To help in that mission, Howard has inked a $500,000 multi-year sponsorship deal with Arrowhead Water. Arrowhead will commit $75,000 toward Dwight Howard’s Grand Champions Foundation. K.C. Blinn, Blue Triton Brands Vice President of Marketing, affirms Dwight Howard’s efforts in community building served as the leading factor to pursue a relationship with the Lakers center. “What was different about Dwight and his team was that they came with a community first and give back direction to it,” Blinn said, according to Forbes. “They really wanted to be a part of leaving a legacy here in Los Angeles.”

These African and African American Entrepreneurs Came Together to Build A Community in Ghana

These African and African American entrepreneurs are giving back the best way they know-how. Kofi Anku, shareholder and board member, is a mission to give back to his community through Ayi Mensah Park, a vibrant 200-unit townhouse community tucked right at the foot of the Aburi Hills in Accra, Ghana. When asked “Why Ghana?” Anku told SHOPPE BLACK that the decision was obvious. Although he was born in Ohio — to Ghanaian parents — it was imperative for him to connect the two worlds. Anku says he and his family’s vision to collaborate is what excites him the most about this project. He reveals they invested in real estate as a family back in the 90s and “were looking to connect with partners who would help them establish their vision.” He hones in on how the CEO and founder of BlackIvy, Cheryl Mills, did just that. Connecting the African diaspora is what Anku says is one of the most important missions of the community that he and his team continue to strive toward building in Ghana....

Goodr Raises $1.25M To Continue Eliminating Food Waste

Did you know that one out of every seven people goes to sleep hungry? On the other hand, more than 70 billion pounds of food are thrown in landfills every year. Apps like Goodr are looking to bridge that gap. The Atlanta-based startup that allows people to connect excess food with those in need announced last week that it raised $1.25M. Goodr is working to eliminate food waste, and although they’ve redistributed about one million pounds of food, they’ll be able to help even more people with this new pot of cash. Goodr plans to launch pilots in Chicago, Raleigh and L.A. For corporate employees who want to find a good use for their excess food, they can list what will be left on the app and a Goodr driver will plan to pick up the food and take it to the communities who need it. They’ve worked with major clients such as Hartsfield–Jackson International airport and more. On the tech side of things, the Goodr team uses Blockchain technology to track the food from where it originates to...
