Fighting for ownership of her land has landed 93-year-old Josephine Wright a new home from Tyler Perry.
As AFROTECH previously told you, Wright was sued by Bailey Point Investment Group for her property on Hilton Head Island, SC. The 1.8-acre parcel of land had been in the possession of her family for more than 30 years. After the passing of her husband in 2012, Wright took over the land.
According to the lawsuit, Wright is being sued for encroachment. Additionally, Bailey Point Investment Group is looking to build 147 homes on the property and allegedly offered Wright $30,000 for her land.
“My porch is not on their property,” Wright said, according to CNN.
Wright’s lawyers claim Bailey Point Investment has employed tactics such as “intimidation, harassment, [and] trespass” in hopes of securing ownership of the land.
“I want to be left alone. I want to live on my property like I have always in peace and quiet,” she expressed, CNN reports.
The case has attracted attention from Snoop Dogg and Kyrie Irving, who collectively donated $50,000 toward Wright’s GoFundMe.
“I did it from the heart,” Snoop Dogg told CNN in a statement. “She reminds me of my mother and grandmother.”
The intended fundraising goal for the GoFundMe was $350,000. At the time of this writing, $363,245 has been raised. The funds were intended to cover expenses for Wright’s attorneys, property tax, and a fence to separate her property from the development.
An update was also shared on the GoFundMe landing page, revealing a tree had fallen onto the home, creating two holes. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Perry, who has been paying close attention to Wright’s case for a while, will be aiding Wright by building a five-bedroom home in South Carolina, a close source revealed to TMZ.
As of this writing, it’s unclear whether or not the house will be built on Wright’s land.
However, what we do know is that construction is expected to begin after permits are issued.
